PHILOSOPHY

T his Doctoral Program, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE), aims to develop researcher-clinicians who are excited about the possibility of making significant research contributions to the field of marriage and family therapy (MFT). Applicants should have a strong commitment to learning to do quality research and to building the science of marriage and family therapy. We believe that the field will flourish as a result of the synergism among research, theory, and practice.  We are looking for students who want to move the field forward through doing research that evaluates intervention strategies and tests theories, and whose own clinical work will be guided by scientific knowledge. All doctoral students in the CDFS Department receive a comprehensive education in statistics and research methodology. In addition, in the MFT program, you will have the opportunity to participate in faculty research, to teach at the college level, and to hone your clinical and supervisory skills. Our goal is to prepare you for a university faculty position or other research oriented career. If your goal is to become part of the next generation of researchers for the MFT field, fully-trained clinicians who are prepared to conduct research on the vexing clinical problems facing individuals, couples, and families today; then we encourage you to apply to our program.

The Purdue MFT faculty is strongly committed to diversity.  We are currently comprised of three full-time tenure track European-American males, but currently have a search in progress for which we hope to attract a diverse candidate. We actively recruit a diverse student body. Currently we have African American, Asian American, international students from five different Asian countries, and European-American students enrolled in the program as well as students with diverse sexual orientations. We also encourage applications from students who are disabled.  Faculty and students are committed toward fostering an environment of integrity and mutual respect for the diversity we all bring to the program. In accordance with Purdue University, the College of Consumer and Family Sciences, and the Department of Child Development and Family Studies policies, the Marriage and Family Therapy Program adheres to policies prohibiting discrimination on the basis of age, culture, ethnicity, gender, physical ability, race, religion, and sexual orientation.

All personal and educational information will be kept confidential within Purdue University in compliance with FERPA and university regulations. Clinical information will be kept confidential within the MFT program. Personal information may only be disclosed with the informed written consent of the student.
