Paths to Quality: A Child Care Quality Rating System for Indiana. What is its Scientific Basis? The system, which will be phased in from January 2008 through January 2009, will be free and voluntary for child care providers. Tippecanoe County will be in the last phase of the rollout in 2009. Military Families to Benefit from Lilly Endowment
An $8.9 million gift from the Lilly Endowment announced October 10 will support the work of the Military Family Research Institute (MFRI). The only such university-based research center in the country, MFRI is designed to help military families better adapt to the challenges of repeated deployments and the stresses of raising and connecting with their children during wartime. Family Impact Seminar Addresses Legislators November 19
The annual Family Impact Seminar, targeted to Indiana legislators, legislative staff, and key decision-makers, will be held Monday, November 19 in the Indiana Senate Chamber. This year's topic is "Meeting the Challenge of Moving Youth into the Workforce: Reducing Dropouts and Increasing Educational Attainment." Get more info on Family Impact Seminars.

Celebration Held for Hanley Hall
A ceremony to celebrate successful fundraising efforts for Bill and Sally Hanley Hall was held October 29. The $11.5 million facility will house the Human Development Institute and foster research on families and aging that will have a wide-reaching impact, not just for the University, but also for the state and beyond. Talking to Children about War, Terrorism, and Peacemaking
A Web site created by Extension specialist Judith Myers-Walls is helping parents and their children in their explorations and discussions of war, terrorism, and peacemaking. It has information for parents, children and teens, educators, researchers, and the media. Visit the Purple Wagon Web site.

Reading, Writing, and School Readiness
High quality pre-K programs can be especially beneficial for children at risk for school failure because of poverty, disability, and language differences. Research in the Department of Child Development and Family Studies is exploring effective ways to promote school readiness in the preschool years.
